| Chelyabinsk (town since 1781) is an industrial centre in the Southern Urals with a population of 1,148,000. The city was founded in 1736 as a fortress. It is 1500 kilometres from Moscow and 200 kilometres from Ekaterinburg, and known as a centre of ferrous metallurgy and the heavy engineering industry.
