| Ekaterinburg is an industrial centre in the Middle Ural with a population of 1,375,000. The city was founded in 1723. Places to see include the 18th-century Mining Chancellery. The major industrial enterprises are Uralmash (engineering), Uralchimmash (chemical equipment production), Uraltyazhmash (heavy engineering). Ferrous metallurgy, and the chemical and stone-cutting industries are well developed. The Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located in the city.
