| Irkutsk was founded in 1661 and is situated on the river Angara near Lake Baikal. The city has a population of 640,000, and is 5000 kilometres from Moscow and 2000 kilometres from Khabarovsk. Among the places to see are 18th-century churches. The city is an industrial centre. There are a heavy machinery plant, machine-tools factory, and aircraft and electrotechnical plants. The timber industry is also well developed. The Eastern Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located in Irkutsk. The city has the university and other educational establishments.
