| Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and the historical capital of ancient Russia first mentioned in a 9th-century manuscript. It is situated on the river Dnepr, 850 kilometres from Moscow and has a population of 2,635,000. Among the places to see are the 11th-century Cathedral of Saint Sophia and the Mikhailovskiy Cathedral; the Kyivo-Pechorskaya Lavra (a monastery of the highest rank); the Orthodox monks' caves; the Mariinskiy Palace; the 18th-century Andreevskaya Church, built by the architect V. Rastrelli; and the monument to Grand Duke Vladimir, who baptised Russia. Among the major industrial enterprises, one of the best known is the Arsenal plant. The machine building, chemical, chemical pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and printing, as well as other light industries are well developed in Kyiv. The city also has a metro system.
