| Riga is the capital of Latvia with a population of 910,000. The city has been known since 1198. It is situated on the river Daugava and used to be the second largest port in the former USSR. There are more than 160 historical buildings and monuments in the Old Town. Among them are Domskiy Cathedral (1211), Peter's Church and Yan's Church. Universities and the Academy of Sciences of Latvia are located in Riga. To the west of the city, there is the famous Baltic Sea resort Yurmala.
