| The capital of Uzbekistan situated at the foot of western Tian Shan mountain range in the Chirchik river valley. The population of Tashkent is 2,113,000. The city has been known since the 4th or the 5th century. The development of the city was facilitated by its location on the famous ancient Silk Route. Among the places to see are the remains of several castles: Ak-Tepe, built in the 6th-8th centuries; Noraz-Tepe, built in the 12th -15th centuries; and Ming-Uruk, built in the 1st -8th centuries. The university and the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan are located in Tashkent. The major industries are machine building, food and light industries.
