| Ulan-Ude is the cultural centre of Buryatia and a port at the confluence of the Uda and Selenga rivers. Ulan-Ude is served by the Trans-Siberian Railroad and a railroad line to Beijing. The city was founded in 1666 as winter quarters for the Cossacks, 200 kilometres from Irkutsk. The population of the city is 362,000. Among the places to see are the Buddhist monasteries Ivolginskiy, Tamchinskiy, Atsagatskiy, and Egituiskiy Datsan; the picturesque surroundings of Lake Baikal; and historical sites related to Genghis Khan and his rule. The principal industries include food processing, tanning, woodworking, and the manufacture of glass, bricks, and railroad equipment. The area is famous for the largest deposits of zinc, lead, gold, tungsten, and asbestos in Russia. The area is rich with strontium, and beryllium.
