| Volgograd is a river port situated on the river Volga, and an important industrial, commercial, and transhipment centre of Russia, a railroad hub, and a major Volga River port. It is linked to the Don River by the Volga - Don Canal. The city was founded in 1589 and has a population of 1,007,000. Among the places to see are the memorial, built to commemorate the battle of Stalingrad (World War II). Among the main industries in Volgograd are oil processing and refining, shipbuilding, and the manufacture of aluminium and chemicals. Farm machinery building, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, woodworking and the food industry are also well developed. A large hydroelectric power dam, the Volzhskaya dam, is just north Volgograd.
