12th European Symposium on
IMPROVED OIL RECOVERY

ORGANISED BY:

  • European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE)
  • Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation
  • Government of the Republic of Tatarstan
  • JSC NIIneftepromchim
  • JSC Tatneft

    Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the Steering Committee, I have the pleasure to invite you to participate in the 12th European Symposium on Improved Oil Recovery to be held in Kazan on the 8 -10 of September 2003 with the support of the Ministry of Energy of RF and the government of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The choice of Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, as the 2003 symposium’s location is not accidental. During the period of oil production in Tatarstan (since 1943) the total amount of produced oil is 2 billion 734 million tons (on the 1st of January 2002). The total predicted oil-in-place in the Republic is now estimated at over 1 billion tons. Except oil reservoirs, the Republic of Tatarstan has over 150 reservoirs of heavy oil and bitumen with probable resources estimated at 3 to 8 billion tons. IOR methods have been employed since early seventies and their application have steadily increased. From 1990 to 2000 more than 10 million tons of incremental oil have been produced in the fields of JSC “Tatneft”. In 2001 about 3,5 million tons of incremental oil have been recovered by applying IOR implementation. Different methodologies have been adapted from well to well, taking into account the local conditions like reservoir characteristics, level of oil recovery and the characteristics of residual oil.
A lot has changed since the intensive promotion of the use of enhanced oil recovery methods in the 1980’s which was driven by the concern about the future development of the oil supply and demand. In the last decade the highly volatile economic scene has resulted in a shift from complex recovery methods to improved oil recovery in which the integration of all disciplines to locate and produce by-passed oil is the central theme. According to the studies of experts by the year 2010 Russia will be producing about 50 million tons of oil using IOR technologies. Currently the high oil price and the maturing of some key basins are making IOR and EOR again key issues for extending the life of oil fields.
The symposium will bring together professionals (leading engineers, managers, scientists) from Western and Eastern Europe, countries of CIS and Asia who have a strong interest in reservoir modeling, well management, reservoir monitoring, remaining oil and novel methods. The official language will be English. During the presentations simultaneous translation from English into Russian and vice versa will be provided to allow speakers to present in one of the two languages (Presentation material still in English). The dates have been selected as such that easy access is possible for visitors from Western Europe directly from Frankfurt to Kazan, flying in on Sunday and options to fly out on Wednesday and Friday.
Parallel to the Symposium at the same location there will be the yearly exhibition on Oil, Gas and
Petrochemistry to which participants of the symposium have free access. This will be a key opportunity for all to see the latest developments in Russia.
On the Thursday following the Symposium, participants can optionally pay a visit to the headquarters of Tatneft and the Romashkino Oil Field, the most important field in Tatarstan. You will also have an opportunity to visit the famous geologic section of Perm system, outcropping on the right bank of the Volga River near Petischi and Tetushi in Tatarstan.
We invite you to share your experience and discuss the most urgent problem for today: how to get the utmost from aging fields as economically as possible.

Looking forward to seeing you in Kazan,
    N.A. Lebedev
On behalf of the Steering Committee for the European
    IOR Symposium
